I can remember those summer evenings on Grandma’s porch. A light breeze would tiptoe across the tall grass in the rolling acres. The land belonged to my Big Momma and Papa. It had been passed down through three generations. The house… ohh that old house had curves, turns, and details that hugged me so tightly. The furniture had flavor, with warm burnt orange and yellow fabric that was kissed by a mahogany stained wood frame. The pictures on the wall danced across my eyes with beautiful faces that spoke to my soul. The sweet smell of freshly baked apple pie tickled my nose. That house was magical! It was the heartbeat of our family. The sound of music would flood through the house as my aunt and uncle would dance the night away on those old wooden floors.

Just like that, I took you along with me to a completely fictional place. You had experienced emotions, you smelled apple pie, you could envision the space because of the specific characteristics that make your house uniquely different from your neighbor’s house. The decor, the style, the scenery in which the house was placed, and the smell of the home all play a major role in our well-being. Your home is the only place on earth in which you can control the entire atmosphere. Transform it into a Masterpiece!
When decorating your home first consider where your home is located. Are you in the city or county? Are you in a neighborhood of similar homes or is every house different? Is your home new construction or an historic home? What is the style of your house? The curb appeal is the first thing you see when you or a guest drive up to your home. The emotion starts there.
Whatever that emotion is from the curb appeal we must grab it and continue the journey starting with the front door color and decor. The entryway is the next destination. Is it cluttered and small? Is there an entryway or does your home immediately open up to your living spaces? Where do we hang coats, umbrellas, and shoes? Our homes should be beautiful but they should also be functional.
Now that we are entering the main living areas of your home is there cohesion in the decor choices? Do the colors on the wall invoke feelings of warmth or coolness? Does the furniture bring balance in the room? Does the furniture layout flow? Are the rooms grounded with rugs? How is the lighting? All of these ideas play a role in making your house a home. How does your home smell? Has the smell of the trash overtaken your home? Does the furniture need refreshing? When decorating your home consider all five scenes to create the daily experiences that refurbish your soul.
Most importantly, does your home reflect who you are on the inside? You are unique in every way. Even if you have an identical twin; your life experiences and personality have created a one of a kind Masterpiece. It is great to get inspiration from magazines or pictures online but do you love it? Don’t buy it if you don’t love it. Take your time and choose each piece that enters your home to be an extension of yourself. Make a plan by walking through these questions in your mind to transform your home into a Masterpiece.
