On May 6th, 2023 the citizens of Rice, Texas voted to re-elect J. Nicole Jackson for her second term. During her first two years in office, Mayor Jackson took action.
After hiring staff to fill a handful of city positions, they were able to address items like putting accountability processes into place, establishing communication with the community and initiating community building events like the Fall Festival & Street Dance, Christmas Tree Lighting, Farmer’s Market, and more.
In addition, the City of Rice has seen development both commercially and residentially. Mayor Jackson and the City of Rice staff have worked to develop a Business Hub, Fitness Center, and outreach to attract businesses needed for the city to stay sustainable.
She is dedicated to growth that serves the citizens of Rice!
During the next two years, Mayor Jackson would like to see completion to projects that have been started. The city should see ground breaking for a new Dollar General Market in the near future – a local grocery store option will become more needed as new housing is added. In addition, the downtown has started developing with new businesses opening, and the unused lots being restored.
The city is also opening an event room perfect for corporate events, networking groups, and family celebrations, which will be available to rent through the Parks and Rec department. In addition to business development, the William Marsh Public Library opened during the summer 2022, and is currently sharing space with the court room. They will be opening doors to a new building off of Calhoun near downtown soon, thanks to help from the Friends of the Library. The city will seek to further improve infrastructure, green spaces, leadership, and board roles.
